A fundraising event in Milngavie tomorrow night will aid a special cause in one of the world’s poorest countries.
The event at Esporta Health, Racquets and Golf Club will boost the Zomba Children’s Project which supports the orphans of nurses in Malawi who have died of Aids and related diseases.
The Glasgow charity is one of many organisations in Scotland which campaign to improve life in the east African country, where more than half the population lives below the poverty line.
Danny Curtis, racquets manager at Esporta, said: “We’re looking to raise some money by having a good night and a bit of fun.”
Events will include a tennis-based quiz and raffle.
Glasgow nurses Liz Galbraith and Christine Skivington, who run the project, have both been to Malawi. Two years ago, on a fact-finding mission organised by the Royal College of Nursing, they were introduced to the National Organisation of Nurses in Malawi.

Liz said: “They asked us if we could support a project that had been initiated by nurses in an area called Zomba, in the south of the country.
“They have lost a lot of nurses and health-care workers to Aids and their children were being left unsupported.
“The other nurses had been trying to ensure the children got an education but were really struggling financially.
“Our four-year project is now in its third year. We’re supporting about 30 children, providing enough money for them to be educated and to get food and clothing, and hopefully stay in their own community.
“The project, which has raised £12,000 so far, is being led by the nurses who have bought chickens and supplies with money we have sent and are trying to start up a hospital restaurant as a self-sustaining project.”
Any extra funds raised are being put towards the local orphanage.
