A driver is being hunted by police after his car rammed Glasgow City Chambers.
The motorist deliberately drove into the main door, then fled the scene.
Police are now trying to trace both the car and the driver and are examining CCTV images from around the area. Witnesses are being urged to contact police.
The alarm was raised shortly after 11pm last night. Emergency services were quickly on the scene.
Today council staff could be seen clearing up the debris, and the doors had been boarded up.
A police spokeswoman said: “We received a report that a vehicle had been deliberately driven at the front door of the City Chambers. We are still trying to trace both the vehicle and driver.”
A council spokeswoman said the cost of repairs was likely to run into several hundred pounds.
She said: “A car hit the front door of the City Chambers last night and police were called.
“The main door is closed but there are several other access points for staff.”
The building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 and is an eminent example of Victorian civic architecture.
The first council meeting was held there in 1889.
