East End drivers have praised The Evening Times’ Pothole Watch campaign.
Locals are demanding action on their roads after we highlighted more dangerous potholes.
Taxi driver George Leadbetter, 55, said: “Potholes do unbelievable damage to our cars.
“Taxis are always having to go in for suspension work because of the damage done.
“I have been following the Evening Times’ campaign with interest. At least someone is doing something about it.”
One pothole in Gallowgate, at the corner of Abercromby Street, is so dangerous that a local van driver’s exhaust fell off after driving over it. The pothole is more than 1ft long and 4in deep – and directly before traffic lights.
It is framed by two smaller potholes – meaning the three combined form a 10ft stretch of pothole-ridden road.
Gallowgate is one of the main artery roads in Glasgow and is busy with double decker buses, taxis and cars.
Another pothole on nearby Tollcross Road is nearly 2ft long and 5in deep.
Local driver Rashid Abdul said: “That hole is so dangerous. So many drivers have driven into it and damaged their cars.
“There’s a massive pothole in London Road too – it’s horrendous.”
Ejaz Ahmed, 38, is a shopkeeper at Lifestyle newsagent in Tollcross Road who is used to hearing customers raise concerns about the pothole.
He said: “So many drivers complain about that pothole.
“It has been there for three or four months and in that time about 15-20 drivers have complained.
“I know of three cars that have definitely been badly damaged by it.”
The pothole is in the centre of the road and difficult to avoid.
The East End will play a big part in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and locals are keen for their roads to be fixed in time.
Mr Ahmed added: “Just now the roads are really bad. There are so many bumps.
“The council needs to fix it. It would really help the East End if we had decent roads.
“The Evening Times’ campaign is so important. It’s a good job they’re doing this.”
Our Pothole Watch campaign is calling for the shocking state of Glasgow roads to be addressed.
So far our campaign has attracted many letters from readers and the support of celebrity chef James Martin.
