At school, he was just another cheeky schoolboy with dreams of playing professional football.

But now, Sir Alex Ferguson will receive a special accolade from the school he believes gave him the grounding to achieve so much.

The 69-year-old manager of Manchester United will be one of the first to be inducted into Govan High school’s newly created Hall of Fame at a ceremony next month.

The former Rangers player has continued to play an active role in the school, and paid a visit last February, as part of Govan High’s centenary celebrations.

Iain White, head teacher at the school, said: “We are delighted to welcome Sir Alex Ferguson into our Hall of Fame.

“He is an inspiration to our students and shows what a Govan High boy can achieve through hard work and dedication.

“Sir Alex is great at keeping in touch, and also offering his own time to the school and its pupils.

“Not only does he take an active role in the school, Sir Alex is also a fantastic role model and gives the young people something to aspire to.

“I know that whenever he takes the time to speak to our pupils, he always conveys a powerful message, which I am sure they take on board.”

The ceremony, due to take place on Monday, February 7, will also see the songwriter Bill Martin, who wrote tunes for the Bay City Rollers, inducted into the Hall of Fame.

He and Sir Alex will be joined by Willie Jones, manager of the Deseo Restaurant and Gleneagles Hotel, Professor Frank Sharp, retired Dean of the Faculty of medicine at Sheffield University, and Dan Whitelaw, retired owner of Neptune Fabrications.

Shipbuilder, Sir Bob Easton will be inducted posthumously and his wife, Lady Jean Easton, will collect the award on his behalf.

The school celebrated its centenary with a year-long series of events, including a display in Govan’s Pearce Institute and a banquet at Glasgow’s City Chambers.

Mr White added: “All of these former pupils have been picked for their amazing achievements and because of the support they give the school. The induction will round off what has been a terrific centenary year for Govan High School.”

Since Sir Alex’s days at Govan High, in the 1950s, the school has moved campus from Langlands Road to Ardnish Street.

With just 344 pupils Govan High may be Glasgow’s smallest secondary but it boasts a hairdressing salon, a swimming pool and a full-size dance studio.

It now also has an all-weather football pitch.
