Paisley Gilmour Street Station is to get a £9million facelift.

Councillors have approved plans for a new roof for the listed Victorian building and work is expected to start in February next year.

But rail bosses have pledged that passengers will not face disruption during the work.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We aim to deliver the project with minimal disruption.”

The plan is to replace the entire roof with a single glazed roof, covering both the platforms and tracks.

The new roof will be 40% bigger than the existing one and the existing roof structure will be strengthened to take the additional load.

Bosses are also proposing to repaint the entire station in the blue and white of the Saltire.

Councillor Iain Nicolson, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Planning and Economic Development policy board, said: “The council welcomes these improvement works which will extend the life of the station, improve the station environment for passengers and enhance the ongoing economic regeneration of the town centre.”

Network Rail are now in the process of appointing a contractor to carry out the work.

Network Rail have also just completed £1m worth of platform replacement work at nearby Paisley St James station, which reopened on Monday.
