Entries opened today for Cancer Research UK's Race for Life, which will be held on Sunday, May 26.

Mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers and friends are all being urged to sign up as soon as possible.

Last year, the 18th of the 5K event, saw more than 12,500 take in Glasgow, raising £781,000 for charity.

The Race for Life is a women-only series of events held nationwide, which raises millions of pounds every year to help fund life-saving research.

The races are non-competitive and women can choose to walk, jog or run around the course.

Entrants are encouraged to dress in pink or fancy dress and every year the Merchant City is filled with thousands of women in tiaras and tutus making their way to and from the start line.

Susan Johnstone, Scotland events manager for Cancer Research UK, said: "There are more than 200 cancers and we will not give up until we find cures for them all.

"Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life, but also remember those who have died from the disease.

"Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress, but what is inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer."

Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its research.

The charity claims that every hour about three people are diagnosed with cancer in Scotland.

Ms Johnstone added: "We are very grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life in Glasgow last year and in the past.

"Thanks to them, Cancer Research UK has been able to make progress against many forms of the disease.

"But the battle never stops and we need everyone to return to the fight this year and bring recruits with them."

The entry fee is £14.99 for adults and £10 for under-16s.
