The Bulgarian star's current club Aston Villa confirmed that the midfielder, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia four months ago, was in remission.
The 32-year-old, who played for the Hoops over seven seasons between 1999 and 2006, developed a fever during a Villa match against Arsenal in March.
The Villa captain, nicknamed Stan, was sent for tests which revealed he was suffering from a rapidly progressive form of the blood cancer. Villa, in a club statement, said: "It is with great delight the club can confirm on behalf of Stiliyan Petrov, that Stan's acute leukaemia is in remission."
The statement added: "Stan's fight is not over. But he would like to share with you this tremendous news now."
