THE 357th Govan Fair begins tonight.

The celebration will see the Fair Queen crowned, followed by a procession through Greater Govan.

There will be free traditional fairground rides at Govan Cross from 3pm for local children, ahead of the crowning ceremony at 7pm at the Victory Christian Centre.

She will lead the Fair Procession from Fairlie Street at 7:45pm on a route to Arklet Road.

This year's Queen, Maids and Attendants are Lorne Street Primary pupils – Queen-elect Rahat Baig, 12; Maids Zartashia Rana, 11, Billie-Jo Leiper, 11, and Eve Eliot, 11; and Attendants Mark Wright, 11, and Mohammad Halane, 11.

Honorary chair-woman Dorothy Courtney said: "The Govan Fair is a great Govan tradition and everyone comes out to celebrate it."

PENILEE student Kirsty Whyte, 23, is holding a fundraising night to help her achieve her dream of getting into a prestigious arts school.

She hopes to take up a place at the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York if she can raise the funds for the two-year course.

WORK is under way to restore the B-listed building at Water Row, Govan, to its former glory.

For the next 13 weeks the external fabric of 5-9 Water Row will be overhauled, in line with best conservation practice.

This will include repairs to the roof, stonework and chimney, an overhaul of the tower, repointing, refurbishment of existing sash and case windows, and structural and joinery repairs where necessary.

RESIDENTS are being urged to turn out to see the first traditional shopfront improvement in Govan.

Local shop owners will also have the opportunity to talk with Townscape Heritage Initiative staff, learn more about the grants that are currently available for Shopfront Improvements and register their interest in taking part in the scheme.

The event will be held between 3pm and 6.30pm on June 19 at the new Cafe 13, 794 Govan Road, Govan.

A PRINTMAKING masterclass is to be held at House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park next month.

The three-day masterclass, from July 20 to July 22, led by Ian Macfadyen from the Painting & Printmaking Department at Glasgow School of Art, will encourage partic-ipants to experiment with techniques and develop fine art prints.
