The fashion world went Gaga as the pop star famed for her outrageous outfits picked up a prestigious style award.

Lady Gaga was presented with the Fashion Icon Award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Awards in New York last night, but her nomination has divided fashionistas, with some paying tribute to the star's wacky style, and others questioning whether she is just too far-out to be considered fashionable.

Addressing an audience packed full of top fashion designers, Gaga said: "All of you made me feel like a star before I was."

Even before she was famous, the star-to-be would save up to buy vintage designer clothes, and told the audience she would plan her weekend outfits as if she was going to the Oscars.

Wearing a corset dress made by Thierry Mugler and a blue wig, Gaga had tears in her eyes as she stepped up to receive her award.

"As much as this award means to me personally, I just want you to know how much this means to young Americans," she said.

Prevous winners of the award include Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Kidman.

Naomi Watts lit up the evening in a stunning gold dress, while Kirsten Dunst decided to wear a manly tuxedo, along with a buttoned up white shirt and a pair of Prada shoes.

Liv Tyler wore a printed silk dress by Proenza Schouler, along with a belt, shoes and bag by the same designer.
