A FIRE chief has called for people to be vigilant over the festive period after several blaze incidents in the West of Scotland recently.

Firefighters attended an incident in a Glasgow multi-storey, a fire in the North Ayrshire Campus of James Watt College and a blaze in Ayr in separate incidents.

Assistant chief officer of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Lewis Ramsay is urging the public to help prevent fires over the festive period by ensuring they have a working smoke alarm.

Mr Ramsay said: "In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm will give you, and your family, vital life-saving minutes to escape safely.

"Every household should have at least one working smoke alarm."

The recent incidents saw four people need treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Mr Ramsay added: "If you or someone you know – a neighbour, friend, or family member – doesn't have a working smoke alarm, I urge you to fit one immediately or call 0800 0731 999 to arrange to have one fitted free."
