IT was high fives all round for a family when their fifth child graduated from Glasgow University.

Following in the footsteps of her three sisters and one brother, Meghan Byrne joined them on the university's list of alumni.

The 21-year-old received a Masters of Social Sciences (Politics) with Honours at a ceremony in the University's Bute Hall.

Sister Samantha earned a degree in Accounting and Finance in 2005, Daniel a Law degree in 2009, Erin a Politics degree in 2010, and Helen a Parasitology degree last year.

Meghan, from Anderston, hopes to ultimately study for a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching.

She said: "All my brothers and sisters enjoyed studying at the university and I was always determined that I would one day follow them and study here.

"I loved studying politics and I'm passionate about inspiring the next generation and I'd love to become a teacher.

"Although right now I'm going to take some time out of full-time education, I think I'll come back to the university to do my postgraduate diploma."

Also at the ceremony, Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger was given an honorary Doctorate of Laws.

The Glasgow-born rowing champion who took gold in the women's double sculls at last year's Olympics, was presented with the honour months after she was named the Alumnus of the Year for 2012.

Katherine, 37, from Bearsden, studied law at Edinburgh University, then completed her Masters degree in Medical Law and Medical Ethics at Glasgow University in 2001, before moving to King's College London to complete her PhD.
