CELTIC can expect a penalty from Uefa after a flare was discharged during tonight's Europa League clash against Dinamo Zagreb.

The red flare was lit at the Celtic end of the stadium during the match, which the Hoops lost 4-3.

Eyewitnesses described "angry scenes" among the crowd and police appeared to use CS spray on the travelling support at the Stadion Maksimir, in Croatia.

The flare was set off shortly before kick-off as around 1500 Hoops fans prepared to watch their team from the away end.

Police in riot gear were also believed to have been deployed to the crowd during the European fixture.

When the two sides met in Glasgow in October, police arrested 17 Zagreb fans for alcohol and disorder offences, including possession of flares and smoke bombs.

Four people were held inside the Parkhead stadium, and the other arrests were made outside and in the city centre.

Celtic fans have been warned before about the use of fireworks and flares.

In 2012, the club was fined £21,000 for setting off fireworks and displaying an offensive banner in a game against Udinese.

Smoke bombs, fireworks and a flare were also set off at a match between Celtic and Motherwell at Fir Park last year.
