RANGERS legend Mark Hateley says there must be more communication across the city when it comes to foodbanks.

The club ambassador spoke to the Evening Times ahead of the launch of our latest Food for Thought campaign highlighting life-line services across the city.

Mark said that councils and governments need to step in and help pool resources for the benefit of those struggling to feed themselves and their families.

He told the Evening Times: "It is a really sad situation but more can be done.

"Communication is the key, I think. When you have so many foodbanks operating across the city it is vital that they link into a network to make sure that all those who need the service are being served as best they can be.

"It is also important that the volunteers and groups running the foodbanks get the support that they need.

"This all comes with communicating with each other and I think that those in power in councils and government could do more to pull this together."

Mark said that supermarkets and businesses also need to take more responsibility for waste, given the climate of a rising number of people being forced to live off hand outs.

He added: "The amount of food that is wasted is something which I think needs to be addressed.

"We still have big supermarkets putting food in the bin which is unacceptable when you have people who are hungry."
