Whole Foods Market, on Fenwick Road in Giffnock, threw open its doors at 9am, with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers providing a rousing Scottish soundtrack.

The company, which boasts such celebrity fans as Angelina Jolie and Victoria Beckham, specialises in organic and natural products.

It sells general groceries, including meat, fish and cheese, as well as fancy foods including 200 types of chocolate.

Sited in a former Morrison's supermarket, which was built on the site of the old Tudor Ballroom, the new shop has created 150 jobs.

Newton Mearns couple Isabel, 74, and David Macmillan, 77, who met at the ballroom almost 60 years ago, were on hand for the opening, along with MSP Richard Lochhead, Minister for Rural Affairs and the Environment.

The Glasgow store is the firm's outlet outside London, where it already has four branches catering to the city's foodies.
