SHOPPERS are flocking to a city mall which attracted Glasgow's first Vue cinema and new restaurants following a multi-million-pound expansion.

Glasgow Fort's customer numbers have soared by 1.5million since the leisure development was completed and trading began a year ago.

The Vue and five restaurants - TGI Friday's, Prezzo, Harvester, Chiquito and Pizza Express - opened last September after the Fort's owners spent £9million on a leisure-themed expansion.

Fort manager Phil Goodman said: "The leisure development has been a very popular addition to our offering.

"We have seen a significant increase in the numbers of people visiting the park which we can, in large part, attribute to the new restaurants and cinema."

He said visitor numbers in the last year have risen by 1.5m, while the eight-screen cinema has shown more than 270 films.

The most popular movie was award-winning Disney animation Frozen, while film buffs also munched their way through 12,738 hot dogs and more than 19,000 scoops of ice cream.

The development created 250 jobs and twice as many are on the horizon when work on another £45m extension, which will include a Marks & Spencer store, is completed next spring.
