GLASGOW'S unused spaces are to be put to good use during a three-week festival.

Launching today, 'somewhereto_' helps find free spaces for young people who have good ideas for how to use them.

The UK-wide project is coming to Glasgow with the help of a £7million grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

Maureen McGinn, Big Lottery Fund Scotland chairman, said: "Glasgow is the hot destination this summer as it prepares to host the Commonwealth Games and welcome visitors from around the world.

"I am delighted, and it is fitting, that somewhereto_ has chosen this city as a venue for their summer festival to celebrate the talents of young people from across Scotland."

Running until July 31, the festival is aimed at celebrating young people who do innovative things.

Open to 16 to 25-year-olds, the event will host one-off events from music, dance and theatre performances, to selling food, clothing and designs, to film screenings, exhibitions, workshops, master-classes and panel discussions.

Young people who have an interest in art, music, fashion, technology or entrepreneurship can contact the charity for support.

Mentors will then help find a free space where they can develop their talents.

The enterprise has helped artist Kerrigan Rennigade with her work painting and selling footwear. She said: "I am honoured to be part of summer of 'somewhereto_'.

"It is a celebration of the talent of our generation and I am really excited to be an ambassador.

"Without the help of the 'somewhereto_' team I wouldn't be able to have my first solo art exhibition this summer. I hope everyone gets involved."

Talent scouts will also be out in the city looking for young people to help.

Ms McGinn added: "I wish this inaugural event every success as it showcases the energy, enthusiasm and creativity of our young people."
