VISITORS to Pollok Park will have plenty to coo about this weekend.

For the first time the park's Highland Cattle Show is being held alongside the Family Fun Day, which regularly attracts around 35,000 visitors.

The big day out, which is free, will feature a host of entertainment, displays and activities for all ages.

Entertainment zones around the park will host a music stage, countryside crafts, children's entertainment, a dance arena, a livestock zone, food stalls and biodiversity activities.

Shampoo, conditioner and giant combs are also being looked out to make sure the coos look their best for the International Highland Cattle Show.

Sunday will see top breeders from across Scotland and south of the border exhibit their cattle in the park.

More than 100 Highland cows are expected to compete across 12 classes, vying to win the Supreme Championship.

A great deal of work goes into getting the popular beasts looking their best.

Marilyn Muir, who helps to run the cattle show, said: "When the public see the Highlanders they think they are just brought out of the field and that's the way they look.

"But a lot of hard work goes into it, as all the breeders have to wash their cows and blow dry them to get them looking absolutely in tip-top condition."

The city council currently has around 70 Highland cows and calves, including Russell, the bull who won fourth place this year at the Royal Highland Show

Alistair Watson, the city council's land and environment spokesman, said: "The Family Fun Day in Pollok Park has been a hugely popular free event over the years and the feedback from last year's event was overwhelmingly positive.

"It is wonderful that the Fun Day is celebrating its 36th year this weekend.

"It has always been a day full of fun activities for all the family and this could be the best one yet now the cattle show has been added.

"It is about making aspects of rural life more accessible to the public who come to see the livestock and enjoy the free activities.

"Once again, the team has come up with something for everyone to enjoy."

The event is being held on Sunday between 10.30am and 4.30pm and all vehicles must enter Pollok Country Park from Pollokshaws Road.
