A DUMBARTION football club is set to benefit from a new Commonwealth Games legacy programme to help grassroots sport across the country.

Dumbarton Riverside Football Club will received a £2,000 donation from the Big Lottery Fund's Commonwealth Games legacy programme, 2014 Communities, which will give out a total of 56 grants amounting to more than £93,500.

The club will be able to put together a football team for people with disabilities who will eventually play against other teams throughout Scotland.

It will also be able to provide new training strips and recruit volunteers to help run weekly training sessions.

The 2014 Communities scheme is a grants programme offering local sports clubs, voluntary and community organisations, community councils and schools donations of £300 to £2,000 to support and stimulate grass roots involvement in sport and physical activity.

Big Lottery Fund Scotland Committee Chair, Maureen McGinn, said: "Since its launch almost four years ago, our 2014 Communities programme has helped thousands of people, irrespective of age, become more active and connected.

"Earlier this month we announced an extra £500,000 for this year's budget, so there's never been a better time to apply."

In total £5.8million will be invested over the lifetime of the fund, which is recognised as part of the Scottish Government's Games Legacy plan.
