A GLASGOW restaurant has pledged to help the city's biggest foodbank feed more desperate families.

City centre seafood restaurant Gamba will be donating £1 from every table to Glasgow City Mission during March and April.

Head chef Derek Marshall stepped in after reading in a previous edition of the Evening Times of Network Rail's plans to host a foodbank in Central Station for the charity.

Next Thursday, staff at Scotland's busiest station will be collection food donations on the concourse from 7am to 7pm.

Derek said Gamba was also determined to encourage other businesses across the city to help and also had other fundraising events planned.

A restaurant spokeswoman said: "Chef Patrol Derek Marshall decided to help on the back of reading about the City Mission's struggle in the Evening Times.

"One pound from every table will go straight into a fundraising pot for the charity.

"He is also looking to encourage other businesses to support the charity.

"He is keen, however, to do whatever he can to support them and dedicate his time where possible."

Graham Steven, who is a fundraising manager at Glasgow City Mission, said: "It's really been phenomenal how people have just come together to help those who are less fortunate than themselves.

"The foodbank is only one of the services we provide, including a drop-in service for meals, and this money will help us deliver these services.

"With the amount of footfall Central Station gets, even a fraction of those passengers has the potential to help so many.

"Food is just the start though. We need to get to the route of why it's needed."
