DETECTIVES hunting a crazed hit and run driver have appealed to garage bosses who may hold the key to catching him.

Police are urging car body workshops and mechanics, who may have been approached to carry out repairs on accident-damaged Volkswagen Golf to come forward.

Officers today stepped up their hunt for the suspect involved in the double hit and run horror.

The 18-year-old victim was left fighting for his life and suffering from a serious head injury after the attack in Glasgow.

Police said driver first hit the teenager in Inveresk Street last Sunday, leading to a row between the victim and the car's passenger.

The motorist then drove off, turned back, and deliberately drove the car at the youth.

Detective Sergeant William Downie, from Shettleston CID said: "We believe that the car involved was a black Volkswagen Golf.

"I would ask the public for any information that may assist our ongoing investigation.

"Has anyone noticed a car matching this description with accident damage - particularly to the front of it, or has anyone recently been asked to repair this type of car?"

Police are treating the incident, which happened at around 8pm, as attempted murder.

The victim, who was walking with friends, has since been transferred from Glasgow Royal Infirmary to the Southern General Hospital.

DS Downie said: "Extensive enquiries have been carried out to trace the vehicle involved and its occupants.

"We are still working to establish the motive behind this incident.

"The 18-year-old victim was initially taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, but has since been transferred to Southern General Hospital and his condition has improved slightly.

"Hospital staff describe his current condition as serious.

"I would still urge any witnesses, or anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police to come forward to officers. "

Dozens of people were quizzed as police returned to the scene at the weekend.

Pedestrians and motorists were interviewed as part of a major operation to find the driver .

Footage from CCTV cameras in the Greenfield area has been gathered in a bid to map the movements of the driver and vehicle.
