Glasgow City FC, whose first team are the number one side in the country and have dominated the domestic game for the last five years, are hoping to develop the stars of the future.

They are offering coaching every Wednesday at their home ground of Petershill Park in Springburn.

As well as playing in the Uefa Women's Champions League, Glasgow City FC has under-11, under-13 and under-15 youth sides.

And for 2012 they are also creating an under-9 team.

Their record-breaking first team has nine current senior Scottish internationalists who combine work, families and study with their sport.

And the under-13s recently became the first Glasgow City youth side to win a major trophy when they lifted the League Cup.

The free coaching is open to any girl aged between seven and 11 years of age and takes place on Wednesday between 4pm and 5pm.

All sessions are led by qualified Glasgow City coaching staff and are open to all abilities.

There is no need to register, just turn up and play.

Club manager Laura Montgomery said: "We are delighted to be putting on our free coaching sessions.

"There is very little for free these days and we wanted to make this investment to encourage as many young girls to have the opportunity to enjoy football as possible.

"There are very few female sporting role models for girls and we live in a country where the statistics show our girls sit third bottom for exercise in Europe.

"This I personally feel is unacceptable and I believe Glasgow City can help provide the role models that can aspire young females to be the best they can be and engage in life in a positive manner and keep fit and healthy along the way.

"We are starting an Under-9s team next season and every girl who comes along to our free coaching has the opportunity to be part of our club and join one of our teams."

The club offer free entry to children under-16 at all of their home Premier League matches.
