A BUDGET airline have announced a new flight to the Hungarian capital.

Wizz air will start the route from Glasgow Airport to Budapest in June.

It will be the first time an airline will fly directly from the city travel hub to the Hungarian capital, with the service operating all year round.

The low-cost carrier has also launched a new route from Glasgow to the Polish city of Lublin, adding to their existing Polish destinations of Warsaw, Poznan, Katowice and Gdansk.

Both routes will be a twice weekly service, with the Lublin flights starting on September 16, and Budapest routes beginning on June 13.

Paul White, business development manager at Glasgow Airport, said: "This is fantastic news for the airport. We are continually working to expand our route network and not only will Wizz Air's new routes further strengthen our connectivity with Europe's major cities, it has huge potential to generate significant in-bound tourism for Glasgow.

"It is important for Glasgow to have regular, direct links with European markets. Budapest is one of Europe's most popular city-break destinations and will be a big draw for leisure travellers."

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "Wizz Air's new routes are a real boost for Glasgow.

"The fact that the people of Budapest voted for a Glasgow service strongly reflects the popularity of our city.

"It is a positive and welcome step from Wizz Air, which provides the perfect opportunity to strengthen cultural and business links between both cities and presents us with even greater scope to grow in-bound tourism."

"Glasgow is constantly striving to improve its air links and connect the city to more European destinations and the wider global marketplace. We're looking forward to working with Wizz Air to ensure the success of these routes."

The next three months will see the launch of a further 13 new routes from Glasgow Airport including direct flights to Las Vegas, Munich, Prague and Bordeaux.

On May 30 2015, Canadian airline WestJet will launch daily, direct flights between Glasgow and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
