CITY council bosses who were facing a £29million black hole in their spending plans for next year have managed to find savings of more than £24m.

But councillors will still have to find cutbacks or ways of boosting income to the tune of £4.6m if they are to make the books balance in the next financial year.

Over the past months, bosses in Scotland's biggest council have been looking at every area of operation to establish if they can save money.

And they have now revealed where they have managed to find £24m.

Social work bosses have managed to save £1m by giving staff laptops and smartphones which allows them to work while they are out of the office.

The council say the devices improve productivity, reduce travel time and the council's carbon footprint and improve customer services.

The social work department has managed to save a further £3m by streamlining the system of providing grants to the voluntary sector, cutting back of duplication of effort and bureaucracy.

A further £3m has been found by providing alternatives to residential care, allowing older people to live longer in their own homes with appropriate support.

Officials have saved a further £1m by developing a council wide approach to charging allowing services to improved cash collection and recovery, reduce bad debt and improve the way bills are issued.
