A SHOPPING centre is enjoying strong Christmas trading, with an estimated 2.5 million shoppers visiting the Glasgow mall over the festive period.

According to footfall figures issued by St Enoch Centre yesterday, more than 1.8m shoppers visited the centre during the last four weeks.

A further 600,000 shoppers are expected through the doors during the final shopping week.

Today has been dubbed Panic Saturday, with Visa Europe predicting that shoppers will spend £1.2 billion on the High Street, snapping up last minute groceries and gifts.

Anne Ledgerwood, general manager of St. Enoch Centre, said: "At St. Enoch Centre, we've enjoyed a great festive season with over 1.8 million shoppers visiting the centre over the last month thanks to some incredible discounts offered by our retailers and the success of our own events programme.

"Our grotto bookings have been significantly up on last year and our free Christmas film screenings have also been very popular.

"Trading highlights include the St. Andrews Day Bank Holiday when footfall soared to 100,000 - the equivalent of our Boxing Day sales footfall - and the weekends leading up to Christmas, which were also incredibly busy. Footfall has also been good in the evenings. Although many shoppers are simply seeking to avoid the crowds I think we are also now seeing the benefits of the switch to late night trading undertaken by city centre retailers just over a year ago.

"We are looking forward to a busy final Christmas shopping week and expect a further 600,000 visitors at the Centre in the coming days."

The festive surge rounds off another successful year for the Glasgow shopping destination, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. Over the summer the Commonwealth Games also helped to boost footfall, with 100,000 extra shoppers seeking out the Centre compared with the same two-week period between July and August last year.

Last year more than 19 million shoppers visited St. Enoch Centre and the latest footfall figures suggest that the Glasgow mall is on track to continue its strong performance this year.
