GLASGOW is on an international shortlist of four cities to be crowned Sports City of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony in Russia later this month.
The inaugural SportAccord Awards honour excellence in sport, with the winners of eight categories set to be announced in Sochi on April 23.
The shortlist was announced on the day Glasgow City Council formally approved funding for the co-hosting of the inaugural 2018 European Sports Championships.
During the 12-day Championships sport stars will take part in athletics, swimming, cycling, rowing and triathlon events as part of an exciting new multi-sport concept.
Glasgow faces tough competition from Rio de Janerio in Brazil; Warsaw, Poland; and Sochi in the Sport City of the Year category.
Lausanne, in Switzerland; Milan, in Italy; Lisbon, in Portugal; and Phoenix, in America; were on an initial list of eight finalists but failed to make the top four following a public vote.
Glasgow's nomination for the 2015 SportAccord Awards comes on the back of the Commonwealth Games while the city also hosted the IAAF Diamond League and Gymnastics World Cup.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "Glasgow's sporting reputation has never been higher after delivering the best ever Commonwealth Games and a host of other international events during 2014.
"We are rightly regarded as one of the world's top sporting cities and to have made the final shortlist in the inaugural SportAccord Awards is a reflection of our incredible journey in recent years.
"This is Glasgow's Year of Sport and we are delighted to join Sochi, Warsaw and Rio de Janerio in the final for the SportAccord Sports City of the Year."
A judging panel of representatives from international Sporting Federations, sports law firms, sponsors, athletes and the media will now select the overall winner at the SportAccord conference.
There are eight categories in the 2015 SportAccord Awards: Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sports Hero, Sports City of the Year, Sports Advertisement of the Year, Sports Sponsor of the Year and Spirit of Sport.
Later this year Glasgow will host the IPC World Swimming Championships at Tollcross International Swimming Centre and World Gymnastics Championships.
Glasgow was ranked eight in the world in the 2014 SportsBusiness Ultimate Sport City Awards. The city was previously ranked number 9 in 2012 and number 11 in 2010.
