Sauchiehall Street, at Elmbank Street, will remain cordoned off while road engineers work to repair the damage.

The busy route is expected to reopen by Monday morning.

As reported in later editions of yesterday's Evening Times, Sauchiehall Street was cordoned off at around 9.15am near Glasgow Dental Hospital.

Diversions have been put in place and drivers have been warned to expect delays.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "I can confirm that, due to subsidence, Sauchiehall Street is closed at Elmbank Street and Elmbank Street is closed northbound at Bath Street.

"Road users are advised to avoid this area and seek an alter-nate route as delays should be expected."

It is the second time in just over a year that the busy city centre route has been closed.

Last year Sauchiehall Street was closed for five months following a massive blaze.

Restrictions were finally lifted in July 2011. Traffic was diverted off the busy street from Charing Cross after fire ripped through a building in February 2011.

Business owners in the area said then they were delighted the road had reopened.

As reported in the Evening Times, some said they had been left in the dark about when the street would reopen.

Bus stops and a taxi rank were also relocated after the road closure.

A family of five was rescued by some of the 70 firefighters who tackled the blaze throughout the night.

It's believed the fire started in the kitchen of the Steak & Cherry restaurant.
