NON-STOP rain drenched Glasgow today as the Met Office issued a severe weather warning for floods – but the sun isn't too far away.

Around an inch of rain fell on the city over the course of the morning and was forecast to last into the afternoon.

But the damp weather is expected to ease off tonight and into tomorrow, giving Glaswegians a welcome respite.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning for floods in Strathclyde, Central Scotland, Tayside, Fife, South West Scotland and Lothian and Borders today – but Glasgow has a mainly dry and sunny Thursday in store.

Helen Chivers from the Met Office said: "Today is a wet one for Glasgow but the rain will die away altogether this evening.

"Tomorrow will be mainly dry, with just one or two showers over the hills around the city. Temperatures will get up to around 19c in the sunshine, making for quite a pleasant day.

"Friday and Saturday should also be mainly dry in Glasgow with some sunny spells, although a little bit cooler than Thursday."

The public have been warned to expect heavy rain and possible travel disruption in the east over the next 36 hours.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has put Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Scottish Borders on flood alert, amid fears persistent rain could bring localised floods.

The Scottish Government's resilience team met yesterday to discuss a response to the wet weather. Transport Minister Keith Brown said traffic would be monitored very closely for the next 24 hours.

He said: "Traffic Scotland is alerting the travelling public in the affected areas, and those who will be heading into the affected areas, via its usual channels – website, VMS signs, internet, radio and social networks."
