SCOTTISH stars will gather tonight to celebrate a year of sporting success.

And at the Sports Person of the Year Awards, in Glasgow, some of their number will be crowned champions.

Among the nominees are action heroes, dedicated coaches and selfless volunteers who have given up hundreds of hours of their time.

Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson and Lord Provost Sadie Docherty will announce the winners at a glitzy ceremony in ­Glasgow City Chambers.

An overall Sports Person of the Year will be honoured with a special award alongside other individuals and groups in 12 categories.

The Evening Times sponsors three awards, including Disabled Athlete of the Year, Young Sports Person of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

Joining para-athletes ­Samantha Kinghorn and Jane Egan and swimmer Andrew Mullen in the nominations for Disabled Athlete is ­Paralympian Gordon Reid.

The wheelchair tennis player competed at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and has his sights set on Rio 2016.

Gordon, 22, lent his backing to the Evening Times Active 2014 campaign which encourages people to take smalls steps to get active.

Samantha Kinghorn is also up for the Young Sports- person award, alongside karate star James Coulter, swimmer Anna Fleming and runner Catriona Graves.

Up for Volunteer of the Year are James O'Brien, Andy Griffiths and Catriona Lessani who founded Sapphire Gymnastics Club in Maryhill.

Other categories include the Lifetime Achievement Award, Team of the Year, Club of the Year, Primary School of the Year, Secondary School of the Year, Student of the Year, Coach of the Year, the Lord Provost's Award and the Leader's Award.

Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life and executive member for the Commonwealth Games, said: "The Sports Person of the Year awards is one of the most enjoyable events in Glasgow's sporting calendar.

"The ceremony is a ­wonderful occasion each year as sportsmen and women, clubs, volunteers, and schools come together to celebrate a number of remarkable achievements.

"Every one of our nominees have shown incredible desire and determination to get where they are today, and 2013 was a particularly memorable year for them.

"It's time to toast that ­success, and I'm looking forward to sharing an enjoyable evening with so many of the city's sports stars."
