SCOTTISH swimming champion Ross Murdoch thanked the "little dude" who wrote to him after his Commonwealth Games success when the pair met for the first time.

Ross appealed for help to find the five-year-old boy after the youngster wrote a fan letter addressed simply to "Ross Murdoch, Commonwealth Champion, Balloch."

After the appeal was launched, Brian Fitzpatrick, from Dumbarton, was traced and the two met yesterday in the pool at Stirling University

Ross, who caused one of the biggest shocks of the Glasgow Games when he won the 200m Breaststroke ahead of favourite and fellow Scot Michael Jamieson, said he wanted to meet Brian and show him where he trains.

After meeting yesterday afternoon, 20-year-old Ross put out photographs of the pair, together with his gold medal, on his account on Twitter, the social networking site. He wrote: "What a little dude! Had a blast and wish him all the best for the future."

The pair had a swim in the pool, which tired the five-year-old. Ross posted a picture showing the youngster asleep in the back of a car and the caption "Wee Brian is knackered."
