OLYMPIC gold medallist Katherine Grainger has unveiled details of the first world netball event to be staged in Scotland in more than 25 years.

The World Youth Netball Championships will be held in Glasgow's Emirates Arena this summer.

The competition, between August 22 and 31, will feature some of the best young netball players from across the world.

Scotland will battle it out against 19 other countries in a bid to be crowned top team.

Glasgow-born Katherine, Britain's most successful female rower, won gold at London 2012, has three Olympic silver medals and six world championship titles.

She has become the new Netball Scotland patron.

She said: "For many young players, the World Youth Netball championships will be the first step on a long and successful career in the game and it is fantastic they will be doing that in Glasgow.

"The event brings together the best young players in the world for what will be 10 days of world-class action.

"I enjoyed playing netball during my school years. It is a fantastic way of getting active and I am delighted to be able to give something back."

The championship is the first world netball event in Scotland since 1987.

Glasgow Life chairman Archie Graham, said: "We are looking forward to what promises to be another summer of breathtaking sport in Glasgow and the World Youth Netball Championships will be right at the heart of it.

"As we look to the Commonwealth Games, it will be a fantastic chance for our young players to test themselves."

Netball Scotland's Freda Hutchison said: "Katherine is a perfect role model for girls and women wishing to get active and take part in sport."
