GP practices in Lanarkshire will stay open for longer over the festive season to reduce pressure on 'Out of Hours' services.

Last year 13 practices were open on the Saturday after Christmas.

This year the scheme has expanded to include 28 GP practices on the first Saturday and 30 on the second.

Patients registered with the practices, who need urgent access to see a GP, will be able to make an appointment between 8.30am and 12.30pm on both days.

A full list of GPs participating in the scheme is available at www.nhslanarkshire.org.uk/HealthyLiving/Winter .

Dr Gregor Smith, Medical Director - Primary Care, NHS Lanarkshire said: "Our Out Of Hours Service, which operates when GP practices are closed, is always extremely busy on the Saturdays following Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

"We asked GP practices if they would open their doors on these days so patients can be seen for urgent appointments sooner and more conveniently on these days."
