GREEN motorists will be able to charge their electric cars at six new points across North Lanarkshire.

Transport Scotland has funded the charge points via an £85,000 grant which North Lanarkshire Council hopes will help encourage the use of electric cars.

The 7kW chargers will be installed at: Airdrie Road Car Park, Kilsyth; Bron Way Car Park, Cumbernauld; Muiryhall Street Car Park, Coatbridge; Elm Street Car Park, Motherwell; Wishaw Station Park and Ride; and Bellshill Park and Ride.

The council has already installed a charger at its Hallcraig Street Car Park in Airdrie, and a rapid charger at the transport depot on Bellshill Road, Viewpark.

Both of these are available for use by the public.

Councillor James Coyle, convener of the council's Planning and Transportation Committee, said: "The use of electric vehicles is increasing gradually in the UK.

"These new charge points will create a network across North Lanarkshire, allowing drivers to travel easily across the area and beyond.

"The council itself is already using a number of electric vehicles as part of our fleet, including pool cars for staff travelling between offices and a minibus to be used to transport pupils in Coatbridge.

"This is part of our strategy to reduce carbon emissions and achieve our air quality management targets."
