A CAMPAIGN group calling for an end to animal research has highlighted a case at Glasgow University.
The group claims at least 31 hamsters were subjected to "volcanic-like internal eruptions".
The National Anti-Vivisection Society said the research into Clos-tridium difficile infection saw the hamsters first implanted with elec- tronic chips before being infected with C.diff.
It added: "The internal effects of the bacteria included 'volcanic-like' eruptions and rapid and extensive damage."
It was carried out after the C.diff outbreak at Vale of Leven Hospital, which claimed 28 lives.
A university spokesman said: "Animals are used in important research targeting diseases- and only where there are no alternatives.
"We adhere to extremely strict ethical and welfare guidelines."
