YOUNGSTERS were treated to a special reading by the creator of The Gruffalo as part of a week-long celebration of books.

Every child in P1 will receive three books during this year's Book Week Scotland (November 25-December 1), including a copy of Paper Dolls by Gruffalo writer Julia Donaldson, above, and Rebecca Cobb.

The two other books are What's The Time Mr Wolf, by Debi Gliori, and Jumblebum, by Chae Strathie and Ben Cort.

The books are shortlisted for the Scottish Children's Book Awards 2013 drawn up by Bookbug, the Scottish Book Trust's early years programme.

A family pack of books also contains Ziggy And Maggie Start School, a children's book about road safety, and A Wee Storybook About Me, illustrated by Ross Collins.

Marc Lambert, chief executive of the Scottish Book Trust, said: "It has been proven time and again that children who have books in the home will reach higher levels of educational attainment than those who do not.

"We want to spread the message to parents that getting your child hooked on reading is one of the most important things you can do for them."
