HOODED gunmen are said to have fired at police in the French city of Marseille, according to reports.
The incident happened on Monday while Prime Minister Manuel Valls was visiting.
Elite troops have been sent to the scene.
It is understood the chief of police was shot at.
It comes just weeks after terrorist shootings in Paris which left 20 people dead.
Last month the officers of the anti-Islamic satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, in which 12 people died.
