Govan Road Campus, which brings together two primary schools and a nursery, opened in August 2010.

But yesterday pupils and teachers welcomed Councillor Stephen Curran to officially declare the school open.

Mr Curran, the council's executive member for Education and Young People, joined parents, officials and members of the local community to watch the children mark the special occasion.

He said: "The opening of any school is a very joyous event and I am obviously delighted to be able to open such a fantastic campus. It also gives the guests a chance to see the delight of the children and staff in their new, bright surroundings.

"The new school campuses that have been built across the city are making a huge difference to the education of our youngsters."

Govan Road Campus houses Riverside Primary, St Saviour's Primary and Broomloan Nursery.

Designed by architects Anderson, Bell + Christie and constructed by City Building, its range of facilities include a library and media suite, gym, assembly and dining hall and synthetic sports pitch.

Youngsters are taught in different classrooms but share a playground, canteen and sports/play facilities.

Riverside Primary School, which brings together the former Copeland and Hill's Trust primaries, has a capacity of 270 with eight classrooms, while St Saviour's Primary has a capacity of 234 with seven classrooms.

A charity, Govan Hands, is also housed on campus to make sure parents become involved with their child's education.

Youngsters said they are settling in well to their new building and yesterday entertained parents and guests.

Teachers helped to design the school, working with architects to make sure the building is ideal for pupils' learning needs.

Mr Curran added: "The atmosphere inside is extremely conducive to successful learning and teaching, and I wish all pupils and staff associated with the Govan Road Campus many happy years in their new building."
