Health centre lands top title

A MODERN health centre in East Renfrewshire has won Public Building of the Year in the Scottish Design Awards.

The £18million Barrhead Health and Care Centre, owned jointly by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and East Renfrewshire Council, opened in the town's Main Street in April, 2011.

Designed by Avanti Architects, the state-of-the-art facility saw off competition from The Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, Clydesmill Community Fire Station and Bathgate Partnership Centre, to land the title.

The centre brings together health and social work services under the one roof, serving more than 20,000 local people.

The vision for the building was developed through the highly successful East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership.

Councillor Alan Lafferty East Renfrewshire convener for social work and health, said: "We are delighted the new building and the architects who worked to make their vision a reality have been recognised for their high standards of design with this accolade."
