RESIDENTS in a Glasgow housing complex were due to have their central heating fixed yesterday - nearly two months after it stopped working.

The 16 homes at Glenalmond Street, Shettleston, were given storage heaters after the geothermal system broke on December 11, but said their bills soared as a result.

They were further hit when the back-up heating system broke on December 13 and was not able to be repaired for two days.

Shettleston Housing Association director Chris Cunningham said residents would be compensation for the rise in their heating bills and stressed the residents had not been without heat, except the weekend when the back-up system broke down.

He said: "Even when the back up system was down, we had distributed convector heaters.

"In addition, each home has an immerse tank and this ensures that homes have hot water as well as space heating."

He said he visited the homes yesterday (MON) and said they were "not in any way cold."

He added: "We have not received any complaints about a lack of heating over the last few days."

Mr Cunningham said he recognised that there had been failures in the system and that they regretted residents had to make use of temporary measures.

A new part was due to be installed yesterday. Mr Cunningham said he hoped the system would be fixed by today but could not guarantee it in case any further issues arose when the contractors started work.

He added: "We believe that the installation of new pumps should resolve matters and we will be working with residents over the longer term to ensure that they are further safeguarded in the future."
