COMMUTERS in Glasgow were facing more rush-hour disruption today as forecasters issued an amber weather warning.

The Met Office and police warned drivers to take extra care on the roads because of the risk of surface water.

Gusts of up to 60mph were predicted in some areas with up to 50mm of rain forecast. Twelve Flood Alerts were issued for areas including Central Scotland and Ayrshire and Arran.

The heaviest of the rain was expected to affect southern and central parts of the country, coinciding with rush hour in some locations. However conditions are expected to improve by evening.

Areas likely to be worst affected are those which experienced flooding earlier in the week.

Rail passengers and those travelling by ferry or plane were being advised to check operators' websites for updates.

An amber (Be Prepared) warning was issued for much of Strathclyde, Dumfries & Galloway, Stirling, Perth & Kinross and the southern highlands.

Met Office chief forecaster Bob Wilderspin said: "The unsettled spell of weather is set to continue with further spells of heavy rain expected across Scotland over the next few days.

"A particularly squally day is expected as strong to gale force winds combine with heavy rain move across Scotland during the day."

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "We have been in regular contact with the Met Office, police, operating companies, the rail industry and other key responders this week.

"Our Multi Agency Response Team will be fully operational to monitor the network and provide assistance.

"Motorists will need to be extra cautious when travelling in heavy downpours."
