CHILDREN in New Cumnock are reaping the rewards of a £9.6 million makeover of their historic primary school – ahead of time.

East Ayrshire Council's renovation of Castle Primary School was due for completion later this year, but nearly 200 pupils are already learning in the new facility.

The 19th-century building had not been used as a school since 2009 and needed extensive refurbishment to create an up-to-date learning environment.

Part of the renovation included a new-build nursery linked to the school by a covered walkway.

Councillor Tom Cook, depute leader of the council, said: "The primary school has a rich history, but time has moved on and it is fitting that the building has been renovated in this way.

"The school and nursery are now equipped for learning in the 21st century and that is what children in New Cumnock deserve."

Paisley-based contractors Barr Construction were responsible for the refurbishment, part of East Ayrshire Council's wider plans for the regeneration of New Cumnock.

The interior was stripped back and all walls, floors, ceilings, doors and windows replaced.

The school now has a gym, dining hall, nine classrooms and a library and media suite. Areas have also been created to accommodate a music and drama centre and an infant activity room.

Outside is a variety of play equipment, bike racks, an eco garden and a soft play area.
