TOURISTS are checking in to Glasgow's hotels and injecting millions of pounds into the city economy.

Demand for hotel rooms has hit an all-time high just weeks before the curtain rises on the new multi-million pound Hydro entertainments complex.

New figures reveal Glasgow's occupancy rate last month reached 93% for the first time since records began in 1999 - the equivalent of 104,000 rooms hired every night throughout August.

And according to Glasgow City Marketing Bureau 22 city hotels reported an occupancy rate of 99% on five separate nights.

Record breaking August brought a double boost with marketing officials also revealing that tourists spent £19million on accomodation, food and drink.

Bureau chiefs play a pivotal role in bringing major events and conferences to Glasgow and last month the city hosted attractions including the World Pipe Band Championships, World Youth Netball Championships, World Street Dance Championships and UCI World Junior Track Championships while global superstars Eminem and Kings of Leon performed in the city.

Marketing boss Scott Taylor said: "There aren't many cities in the world that can host four world championships as well as some truly global music icons in a single month. But Glasgow proved it was more than capable which in turn generated significant business for the city's hotels."

The bumper figures were based on 22 hotels which have a total of 3628 rooms.

Statisticians with LJ Research multiplied the rooms by 31 - based on the 31 days in August - before working out the percentage figure.

Research director Sean Morgan said: "In addition to growing volumes, hotels also benefitted from higher room revenues."
