HOUSING Minister Margaret Burgess visited Glasgow Housing Association staff to see how they are working round the clock to make sure tenants stay safe during winter.

GHA has taken around 4700 calls and carried out more than 2300 repairs since Christmas Eve.

Over the two-week holiday period last year, staff dealt with more than 12,000 calls.

GHA, part of Wheatley Group, also runs an annual 'WinterReady' campaign, offering free checks to help older tenants get their home geared up for freezing temperatures.

Ms Burgess said: "Today, I have seen for myself the essential work being undertaken by the GHA repair team.

"Their tremendous efforts, working round the clock, is providing an expert repair service for tenants across the city.

"At this time of year, particularly with the weather at its worst, people want to be sure that if they have faulty heating or lighting, they can rely on the repair team to fix the problem.

Their commitment is being mirrored across the country. Other publicly funded and voluntary bodies are also working hard to help their communities."
