POLICE were today still searching for a gunman after shots were fired at a man in north Glasgow.

The victim is recovering in the Western Infirmary where he was yesterday said to be in a serious but stable condition.

As reported in later editions of last night's Evening Times, he was discovered in Haywood Street, in Parkhouse, shortly after 7pm on Tuesday.

A burnt-out car was found nearby and officers are linking it to the "outrageous" attack.

It is not known whether the 28-year-old man was the intended victim.

Detective Inspector Jim Bradley appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "Haywood Street is residential, with lots of homes in the area.

"It was still quite early in the evening and I am sure that there would have been people about who saw or heard the incident take place.

"It is imperative that we catch those responsible for this attack. To brazenly discharge a firearm in a residential area is outrageous."

Neighbours reported hearing noises sounding like fireworks before realising they were actually gun shots.

Forensics teams were seen scouring the area, with some officers inspecting a black BMW parked in the quiet residential street.

Others were reported to have removed a walkie-talkie and removed it from the scene in a bag.

A pink blanket was also spotted lying crumpled nearby the site of the incident, covered in blood.

Councillor Kieran Wild was surprised to hear of the shooting.

He said: "There has never been anything like that in Parkhouse and it's obviously very shocking and upsetting for people to think that something like this is going on.

"The area has its own problems but nothing like this. There are a lot of retired people in the area and families.

"It must be very worrying for residents to hear of this, it's not that sort of area. It doesn't feel like an unsafe place generally. There are isolated incidents like this, often drug and gang-related, but it's between people who know each other. The area is not typically known for this.

"I would encourage residents to report anything suspicious to the police but I don't think they should be afraid to leave the house.

"It's an isolated incident."

The long residential tree-lined street on which the incident took place leads from Balmore Road, a main thoroughfare from North Glasgow to the centre of the city.

As reported earlier this month, fears were growing of gangland warfare after another man was shot in East Kilbride.

The 45-year-old man was shot in both legs and thrown down an embankment close to a busy road on March 13.
