A prankster has been ordered to sign the sex offender's register after pulling down a 19-year-old's trousers - which he claimed was "just banter".

Chef Paul Andrew Peggs, 41, approached the victim as he sat outside a pub in Ripon, North Yorks., and commented on his hair colour.

York Crown Court heard Peggs then asked the victim what his natural hair colour was before lifting up the teen's shirt so he couldn't see, grabbing his jeans and pulling them down to expose his pubic hair.

The victim, who had been in the smoking shelter of The Navigation pub with a female friend, pulled his clothes back on and said he felt "angry and upset".

The pub's landlord and landlady said that they later noticed the victim crying.

Sophie Drake, prosecuting, said that when interviewed Peggs stated: "It was banter, nothing sexual."

Peggs later approached the teenager and tried to apologise - telling him he "didn't mean anything by it".

Peggs, of Ripon, North Yorks., pleaded guilty after the incident which happened at around 1.30am on January 8.

Recorder of York Judge Paul Batty QC said: "That sort of activity is deeply upsetting and deeply humiliating for that young man."

Peggs was given a 12-month community order with 200 hours unpaid work and was ordered to pay £750 in compensation and £250 in court costs.

He will be on the sex offenders' register for five years.

It is not known what the colour of the victim's hair was.
