A 100-YEAR-OLD woman will celebrate the milestone today with the "wonderful" family she credits for her longevity.

Mary Sheil, who has only recently moved into a care home, said there was no magic formula for her reaching her centenary year.

But she added: "I've led a very happy life and have a wonderful family and I think that's helped."

Mary toasted her birthday yesterday with a wee drop of her favourite drink, Drambuie liqueur.

The grandmother-of-seven was born in Govanhill but moved to Ireland while her father served in the Irish Guards during WW1.

The youngest of three, she suffered the loss of both her mum and sister as a young girl.

When she moved back to Scotland, she settled in Hillington on the outskirts of Glasgow and met her husband James at the dancing and the couple were married on Boxing Day 1939.

James was in the air force and passed away in 1978 after 39 years of marriage.

The couple had three children, James, Jerry and Elizabeth and Mary.

The hardly OAP lived in her own home in Hillington until December 2016 when due to failing eyesight she made the decision to move into Oakview Manor Care Home in Pollockshields.

She said: "When I woke up on my birthday I didn't feel any different. '

"I've got a good brain but that can be hard because you get frustrated because you want to do things but you can't.

"I don't think I have any special secret.

"I have enjoyed my life and as a parent you wish only the best for your children, I am so proud of them all."

Iain Ballantyne, Oakview Manor Care Home’s Manager said: “It’s a pleasure having Mary in our home and it is very special to be able to celebrate her 100th birthday with her.

"At Oakview Manor, we work hard to make sure our residents’ birthdays are really special events – especially milestone birthdays like these. Everyone at the home wishes Mary a Very Happy Birthday with many more happy years to come.”
