A racist car owner posted an offensive post on Facebook advertising the sale of his vehicle to “ENGLISH PEOPLE ONLY.”

The controversial post - made by a man living in the 2017 City of Culture - advertised a seven-seat grey Vauxhall for around £1,700.

The post read: “Only selling to English people no other race accepted.”

He then added: “Perhaps putting a ad on like this will stop time wasters especially foreign people lol you know who you are. [Sic].”

Humberside cops have said it would have been investigated as a potential race hate incident.

In the year that Hull, East Yorks., is celebrating its tenure as the UK City of Culture, the Facebook post came as a massive shock to a former asylum seeker.

Bashir Firaj, 50, deemed the post to be racist and found it upsetting that some people were still keen to air hurtful views about other races in today’s society.

Bashir, who came to the city from Pakistan in 2008, said: “It’s very unpleasant and comes across straight away as disrespectful to other cultures. It’s absolutely shocking.

“It worries me that these views still exist and I imagine I’m not alone - we should never condone this type of behaviour.

“This kind of racism needs to be challenged - it needs to be brought to the knowledge of others.

“It’s worrying. Hull is becoming a very multicultural city and very open and it offers hospitality to people with different cultures but racism is still a massive problem.

“He isn’t the only one but there is a small minority - the majority of people are welcoming.”

Although the man did not commit a criminal offence, Humberside Police have condemned his “deplorable attitude which has no place in our community.”

PC Danny Fleming, said: “No one has called us to report this post as being offensive or that they have been offended by this post, but had this happened, it would have been logged as a hate incident.

“We have a fantastic mix of cultures here in the Humberside force area and this is something to be celebrated.

“Our teams work closely with all our communities and we make it very clear that hate will not be tolerated in Humberside.

“Victims will be taken seriously and they will be believed. This is not something they just have to put up with and all incidents should be reported to us.”

Anyone wishing to report a hate crime should call police on 101.
