A dog-lover had his arm bitten off by a crocodile when he rescued his dogs from an infested lake - and was then fined for trespass.

Mudit Dandwate, 26, followed his dogs into the crocodile-filled lake when he was attacked by the juvenile beast.

It clamped its jaws around the engineer's left fore arm and tried to drag him into the deeper waters in Ramanagaram in south Indian state of Karnataka.

Miraculously the businessman was able to fend off the croc - but not before it ripped off his arm.

Four forest officials patrolling the area rescued Mudit after hearing his cries for help - but later fined him for trespassing into the waters.

Locals said the government workers claimed he was in breach of boards around the lake which warned of crocodiles.

Dr Thomas Chandy, orthopaedics chief at Hosmat Hospital, where Mudit was treated, said: "Mudit has been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit.

"Crocodile jaws are very strong and their bites are poisonous hence the arm has suffered much impairment.

"Damaged tissue has been removed from the wound to prevent infection.

"We will repeat the procedure on Monday and attach an artificial limb."

The incident happened on June 25.
