AMAZON has announced plans to give its UK customers the fastest delivery service in the world - by use of drones.

The online retail giant has been given the go-ahead by the Government and the Civil Aviation Authority to trail Air Prime tests.

The company claims customers would have goods delivered to their homes in as little as 30 minutes.

Drones have come under fire in the past as they can weigh as little as 500g and fly up to 100mph.

The GPS tracking system can also be turned off, meaning spotting them can be difficult, sparking fears they could collide with planes.

Doug Gurr, Amazon’s UK boss, described how the high-speed deliveries are “the goal we’ve set ourselves.”

Speaking at a British Retail Consortium event in London, he said: “Next day is the standard service, but we can offer one-hour through Prime Now with ground transportation.

“We think we can get that down to 30 minutes from click to delivery if we use drone technology.

“We are doing live testing of autonomous vehicles delivering to real customers.”

Last week, Amazon announced it is boosting its UK workforce with plans to add 2,500 permanent jobs across the business by the end of the year.

The jobs will be across “all levels of experience” and include software developers, engineers, technicians and those seeking entry level positions and on-the-job training.
