The countdown clock is ticking, ready for lift off, as Hayley Moss prepares to jet off to Houston.

The high-flying sixth year pupil, from Woodfarm High School in Giffnock, has fought off stiff competition to be part of a team of youngsters who will find out more about what goes on behind the scenes at Nasa.

Out of 100 pupils taking part in the University of Strathclyde's Scottish Space School this summer, Hayley was one of the top 10 selected to take part in a week-long trip to Johnson Space Centre.

"Space School was a lot fun," says the 17-year-old. "We did a rocket design challenge and launched the rocket at Bellahouston Park. And we met astronauts from Nasa, one of them Amber Dell who has been working on the Orion project, which is building a shuttle for Mars."

When the group arrives in Houston, they will work in the labs at Ivy League College Rice University in Texas.
