A DRUNK motorist has been jailed for nine months after he drove into a Good Samaritan who was reporting the driver's crime.

Patrick McManus' car was spotted by Arshad Sadiq, 44, smashing into a barrier and being driven off.

But, as Mr Sadiq was telling a police officer near the scene, boozed-up McManus struck the witness, trapping his leg.

Medics freed Mr Sadiq after an hour-long ordeal and took him to the hospital where they battled for hours to successfully save his leg.

McManus, 64, of Kinfauns Drive, Drumchapel, pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving, hitting the police car and Mr Sadiq to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and permanent impairment.

He also admitted driving while more than four times the legal drink drive limit.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Andrew Normand said there was "no other method of dealing with this" than by jailing him.

McManus also had his car forfeited and was given a five-year drive ban.

Speaking at his home in Bearsden, Mr Sadiq said the incident last May 27, has totally changed his life.

He was in his car with his 16-year-old daughter Farah when he saw McManus on Kinfauns Drive turn on to Drumchapel Road and crash into railings.

He decided to phone the police and they noted the car's registration number.

Mr Sadiq said they stopped at traffic lights behind McManus and overtook him when the lights turned green.

Mr Sadiq then stopped to report the incident to an officer. But as he spoke to the officer in the squad car he was struck by McManus' vehicle.

Mr Sadiq said: "I was turning to walk back to my car and he came at the other side.

"He dragged me from where I was and I felt the crunch where he crushed my leg.

"I turned and saw it was the same person."

Mr Sadiq, who is only now becoming mobile said: "I have always kept fit, played football and badminton and took my kids swimming. I suppose there's a little bit of bitterness."
